Even when it looks idle, the Windows operating system is performing numerous operations in the background. If you wish to see what is happening beyond your desktop and icons or find the source of a problem, Microsoft Message Analyzer can help you. Its purpose is to capture protocol and system messages and to display them in an easy to comprehend manner. Also, the software allows you to import data from logs and trace files and analyze them.

Microsoft Message Analyzer is free and it can be used with any popular Windows version. Downloading and installing the program is not difficult and it should not take long to complete the operation. It provides support for both 32 and 64-bit operating systems and it requires .NET Framework 4.0 or later.

When launched, Microsoft Message Analyzer will display dashboard, with quick trace options, for the firewall, web proxy and local link layer. Selecting one of these components will immediately start a new tracing session. The program is capable of running multiple tracing sessions in parallel, so you can always return to the dashboard to set up a new session, for a different component.

Active sessions are displayed on the same window, on separate tabs. Captured messages are listed with various statistics and you can also select them to view additional information, on different panels. Besides timestamps, sources and destinations, the program displays other details, for each message, like checksums, binary data, call stacks and more.

Another useful feature is the possibility of displaying charts, on separate tabs. The program gives you full control to customize the charts, so you can make them bar graphs, pie charts, include specific details, set up a number of rows and columns and more. Each capturing session can be saved, so you can resume capturing from where you left off.

Pros

The program can monitor several message flows in parallel. Setting up capturing and tracing sessions is quite easy. You can display and customize your own graphs and save your sessions.

Cons

Microsoft Message Analyzer is not intended for inexperienced users, so its controls may be confusing for some people. Microsoft Message Analyzer gives you the possibility of analyzing, tracing and assessing messages from almost any system component on your computer.
